Description

  • The Zandé are a population of Central Africa, living mainly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, on the Upper Congo, in western South Sudan around the banks of the Uelé, as well as in the Central African Republic. Their beliefs mostly revolve around magic, oracles and sorcery. Witchcraft is believed to be an inherited substance in the womb that lives a pretty self-sufficient life performing bad magic on people’s enemies. A witch can sometimes be unaware of her powers and may accidentally strike people the witch wishes no harm to. Since it is always present there are several rituals related to the protection and nullification of witchcraft, performed almost daily. Oracles are a way of determining where suspected witchcraft comes from and they were for a long time the legal authority, the one telling how to respond to threats.
