Description

In Pende tribe , Democratic Republic of Congo, a protective post is carved with a representation of a maternity scene. The ancestral, matrilineal mother is depicted standing with her feet blending into the base and holding her child with her left hand while placing her right hand on her hip. The sculpture is made of wood and natural polychrome pigments in red, white, and black. These types of poles, called maternity poles, are believed to promote fertility among women in the village and are kept in the chief’s hut.
